The one thing I've found that helps have rational political discussions is to focus on a specific issue or topic at a time instead of flag-waving for any political theme.

Not a panacea or cure - and doesn't really help when the other person(s) thinks you have few/no rights, but it does help crack the "my team VS your team" crap that keeps things from being solved.
